Cinco de Mayo Children’s Craft Projects Part Uno

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Well almost.

It’s hard to believe that May is almost here, but it’s just around the corner! We can’t wait for warmer temperatures and sunny days. So we are busy thinking and creating Cinco de Mayo craft projects. This week we started learning all about the Mexican holiday through, you guessed it, art.

Mayan Headdress

The Mayans have beautiful headdresses. We decided to make a smaller, less elaborate version for our little artists.

Little ones usually love wearing what they make. Your little artist can make his or her own Mayan headdress. Simply print off a copy of the medallion. Use your little sponges and some gold craft paint.

Then make a band of black paper just long enough to fit around the head. Cut out and glue the dry medallion on the front. In the project link, you’ll find we suggest adding beautiful natural feathers to this project. We were on a bit of a time crunch and hope to go back and add feathers to our own headdress later. If we do, we’ll be sure to update our pictures.

Pinatas

Pinata Craft ProjectA simple pinata without all the glue or candy!

This pinata makes a great Cinco de Mayo decoration. Your little ones can practice their cutting skills with this art project. You can make just one or an entire herd. To make a banner,  simply make more copies. We actually made several pinatas and tied them on ribbons to create a banner.

We encourage your little artists to color their pinatas as they would like, offering them a selection of bright colors. After all, it is a party!

We hope that when you celebrate Cinco de Mayo, you’ll tell your little one, “You’re so creative!”
