Frog Crafts for “Frog Jumping Day”

Frog Jumping Day Crafts

“Frog Jumping Day?” It seems like there is a day for everything now. In our research we found this unofficial international holiday.

This year Frog Jumping Day is observed on Sunday, May 13, 2018. In other words, right on Mother’s Day. This Frog holiday has to do with Mark Twain’s first short story about a pet frog named Dan’l Webster from 1865: “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog”. The story may be found here.
Frog Jumping Day is an unofficial holiday. Celebrated in California, an annual Frog Jumping contest has taken place every year since 1849. It attracts tens of thousands of attendees each year, all trying to beat the record jump of 21 feet and 5 3/4 inches, set in 1986. Even if you don’t have your own frog, everyone should try at least to jump like a frog on Frog Jumping Day!
Though our Frog craft projects don’t jump, they are still fun to make. Maybe your little artists will jump for joy when they see what they are making this week.

Island Frog

Island Frog Craft ProjectThis project can be done in any of your little artist’s favorite colors. We decided to make a blue and an orange frog this week. You may also choose to do two to three colors at one time for some added fun.

This craft uses a simple sponge painting technique that is easy for little ones. We highly recommend these Decker Sponges, cut in half. They’re small and easy for little hands to control. When you are done, use a little Dawn dish soap and warm water, and they are ready for the next project.

Forest Frog

Frog Craft ProjectWith our Forest Frog craft project, you can color, cut, and glue your way to making this handsome frog. Color with markers or crayons any way your little artist chooses. When done coloring, simply use cut pieces of yarn to give your frogs some legs. Older children might find it fun to cut out their frogs, and then attach its legs and feet together with yarn.

Celebrate Frog Jumping Day with a craft, a jump, or even just a joke. While crafting with your little artists, share the joke about frogs. Ask them, “Why do frogs jump?” “Because they are hoppy.”

However you choose to celebrate Frog Jumping Day, we hope you have fun learning with art about this unique unofficial holiday. We know that your projects will be amazing, because “You’re so creative!”
