International Penguin Day

We love fun and wacky holidays like International Penguin Day. This year the holiday takes place on Monday, January 20th.

Today we are taking the opportunity to learn all about penguins. Your little artist might be surprised to learn that some penguins are as big as they are. The Emperor Penguins are between three and a half feet tall to over four feet tall. Yet some, like the Little Penguins, are only a foot tall.

It might be fun to grab a measuring tape and show your little artist how big and small penguins can be.

Almost all of the penguins live in the southern hemisphere, not at the North Pole, as most kids think.

Big penguins or small – we think they make great craft inspirations. Today we are making two adorable penguin craft projects. Our first project will not only teach your little artist about penguins, but also the shape of a heart.

Heart Penguin

Today we are learning how to layer these two heart shapes to make this adorable penguin.

Supplies:

  1. Copy of penguin pattern or construction paper
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue stick
  4. Large google eyes

Directions:

  1. Cut out penguin parts, either from pattern or free hand.
  2. Have the child glue the parts together.
  3. Glue on eyes.

In our final project for today, your little artist will refine his or her small motor skills while coloring and cutting out this next penguin.

Penguin

Supplies:

  1. Copy of penguin
  2. Crayons or Marker
  3. Safety scissors

Directions:

  1. Print penguin.
  2. Color.
  3. Cut out.

If you make several of these penguins, you can teach your little artists that they have designed a colony, rookery, or waddle of penguins. But if their group of penguins were in water, they would be called a raft!

We hope you and your little artist had fun learning all about our penguins on International Penguin Day. I know no matter how many penguins you make, you are sure to tell your little artist, “You’re so creative!”
